Cocoa farmers in the Akyemansa District of the Eastern Region have expressed support for the government’s decision to reduce the 2025/2026 cocoa producer price by 28 percent to GH₵2,587 per bag.

The reduction follows Côte d’Ivoire’s announcement of a significant 57 percent cut in its mid-crop cocoa farmgate price for the March to August 2026 season, bringing it down to 1,200 CFA francs per kilogram.

While acknowledging that the adjustment reflects global market trends, the farmers are urging the government to introduce additional incentives to improve the profitability of cocoa farming, particularly in rural communities.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ofoase-Ayirabi Constituency recently engaged local cocoa farmers to discuss the government’s commitment to supporting the sector.

During the engagement, farmers called for subsidies on fertilisers, improved access to farming tools and better rural infrastructure to ensure the long-term sustainability of cocoa farming in Ghana.

The District Chief Executive for Akyemansa, Linda Ahenkorah, acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting the cocoa sector.

Despite the difficulties, she emphasised that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers across the country.

Ms. Ahenkorah appealed to farmers to remain patient and continue supporting the government. She also encouraged them to form or join cooperatives, which would enable COCOBOD to effectively implement irrigation projects when they are rolled out.
