Voting has started smoothly at the 113 polling stations in the Ayawaso East constituency, where the Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting a by-election.

Five aspirants are contesting the race, including former Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The other candidates are Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), independent aspirant Umaru Sanda Muhammed, who recently severed ties with the NDC, as well as Ibrahim Iddrisu and David Kannor.

The Electoral Commission disclosed that 49,966 voters are on the electoral roll in Ayawaso East. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and are scheduled to close at 5 p.m.

The by-election became necessary following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away in January while undergoing treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, leaving the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat vacant.
