The Ahafo Region Minister, Charity Gardiner, has officially launched the construction of the College of Health Sciences in Kenyasi No. 1, located in the Asutifi North District. The initiative aims to train more mental health nurses across the country.

During the sod-cutting ceremony, attended by chiefs, Members of Parliament (MPs), Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs), Ghana Health Service staff, security officials, clergy, health students, and various politicians, Minister Gardiner emphasized that the college is fully funded by the government.

She noted that the establishment of the college forms part of the nation’s efforts to address rising mental health issues.

Minister Gardiner expressed her appreciation for President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to establish the college in the Ahafo Region. She stated that once completed within the contractor’s two-year timeline, the school will serve not only the local area but also the middle belt of the country.

She added that, in addition to accommodating full-time students, trainee nurses from the middle and northern regions will receive their mental health and psychiatric education at the institution.

Minister Gardiner also thanked President Mahama for ensuring that the Ahafo Region receives necessary developmental support, similar to what has been provided to other regions.

The Kyidomhene of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Kwabena Ofori Acheampong, along with the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, expressed the district’s commitment to supporting the government in making the project a reality. They encouraged residents, particularly students, to study hard and aspire to join the school, thereby contributing to a steady supply of mental health nurses who can help save lives across the country.
