The Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, has announced a 20 per cent salary top-up for teachers who accept postings to rural and underserved communities, as part of efforts to tackle inequalities in Ghana’s education system.

Dr. Apaak made the disclosure during a courtesy call by top awardees of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education across the country.

He explained that the incentive is part of the Teacher Dabre Programme, designed to motivate teachers to accept postings in hard-to-reach areas. In addition to the salary increase, beneficiary teachers will also receive accommodation support to ease the challenges of rural postings.

According to Dr. Apaak, the combined financial and housing incentives aim to make rural teaching positions more attractive while enhancing teaching and learning outcomes at the basic level.

He noted that the initiative was first announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address, reflecting the administration’s commitment to bridging educational gaps.

“The President has a programme that will reward teachers who take up positions in rural areas. These teachers will receive 20 per cent on top of their gross salary as a form of motivation,” he said, emphasizing that the policy seeks to ensure pupils in underserved communities have the same opportunities to succeed as their urban counterparts.
