Black Stars defender Mohammed Salisu has begun his rehabilitation process after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury earlier this year.

French side AS Monaco confirmed that the centre-back suffered a tear in his left knee during a match against Olympique Lyonnais in January.

Before the setback, Salisu had established himself as a key figure in Monaco’s defence, stepping in impressively for Eric Dier and Soungoutou Magassa. His commanding performances brought much-needed stability to the club’s backline.

The 26-year-old underwent successful surgery and has now returned to the gym as he works steadily towards full fitness.

As part of efforts to support injured players ahead of the FIFA World Cup in June, Black Stars team doctor Prince Pambo visited Salisu in Monaco. Dr Pambo is expected to continue his visits in France, including a scheduled meeting with Francis Abu on Wednesday.

The former Southampton defender made his debut for Ghana on September 23, 2022, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 friendly defeat to Brazil.

Salisu has featured in seven FIFA World Cup qualifiers, scoring two goals as Ghana secured qualification for the tournament in North America.

However, it remains unclear whether he will recover in time for the global showpiece, which begins on June 11, as he has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Black Stars are stepping up preparations for the World Cup, with efforts underway to ensure all players are in peak condition for the tournament.

Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama before facing England and Croatia in their remaining group matches.
