Thousands of chiefs and Islamic leaders have converged on the Nyage community for special Islamic prayers organised by the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, under the Kamara Clan.
The grand prayer session was held to seek peace, unity and development for Nyage, the ancestral home of the Gonja kings. Islamic clerics from within Ghana and neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire, including Alhaji Mour Mousah and Alhaji Iddrisu Kamara, joined in Qur’anic recitations and prayers for the Overlord and the community.
Speaking to the media on behalf of the Yagbonwura, the Secretary to the King, Chief Akunatu, said the event marked the first time a Gonja king had personally moved to Nyage to organise such prayers.
He explained that although Nyage was the original seat of the Gonja kings, challenges in the area led to the relocation of the palace to Damongo, leaving the community deprived of development over the years.
According to him, the initiative by Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I is aimed at reviving development in Nyage and promoting peaceful coexistence, including plans to relocate some settlers in and around the community to other areas.
Members of the Gonjaland Youth Association, who were present at the prayers, expressed excitement about the historic event, describing it as the first time a Gonja king had organised prayers specifically for peace, unity and development in Nyage.
The Public Relations Officer of the Association, Malik Mankir, underscored the significance of the Islamic prayers, stating that the Association’s vision is to see sustained development and peaceful coexistence between settlers and indigenes in the Nyage community, which falls within the Sawla District.
