The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso and a leading member of Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s campaign team, Davis Ansah Opoku, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections partly to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Ansah Opoku said voter apathy played a significant role in the party’s poor performance.
“During the 2024 elections, a lot of people refused to vote. Based on the data, most parliamentary candidates performed better than Dr. Bawumia,” he stated.
He argued that the outcome should prompt the party to critically assess whether its candidate was appealing enough to mobilise voters, stressing that the NPP must prioritise electoral performance over sentiment.
“We should ask ourselves what really happened. Was it that our candidate wasn’t appealing enough for people to vote for him?” he questioned.
Mr. Ansah Opoku added that historically, the NPP has rewarded strong performance rather than repeating candidates, noting that introducing new faces has often improved the party’s acceptability, charisma, and nationwide appeal.
“The NPP is aiming at victory. Politics is about numbers, not emotions,” he stressed.
