Parliament has approved the removal of the COVID-19 levy, a tax introduced during the Akufo-Addo administration to fund pandemic-related expenditures. The decision follows the Finance Minister’s announcement in the 2026 budget that the levy would be scrapped.

Government says the move is aimed at easing the financial burden on households, providing relief for businesses, and supporting broader economic transformation.

During parliamentary debate, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin welcomed the repeal but called for further tax relief measures.

He urged the government to “go further” by eliminating the One Ghana Cedi levy on petroleum products and the 18 percent electricity tariff, describing such steps as necessary to remove what he called “nuisance taxes” and demonstrate a genuine commitment to supporting citizens.
