The Police Council has recommended a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno ahead of his mandatory retirement in December 2025.

According to sources from MyJoyOnline, the recommendation has been forwarded to President John Mahama for approval.

If approved, the extension will allow IGP Yohuno to continue leading the Ghana Police Service through ongoing reforms, modernisation efforts, and other critical national security operations.

Mr Yohuno was appointed IGP by President Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, on March 13, 2025, and was sworn in the following day, succeeding Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, a role he assumed in July 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The proposed extension, if granted, will help maintain continuity in leadership as the Police Service advances key initiatives in security and personnel development.
