The direct family of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has expressed strong objections to a widely circulated funeral date allegedly announced by Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu and members of a dissolved funeral committee.
In a detailed press release, the family described the billboard announcements in Accra and Kumasi as unauthorized, misleading, and unacceptable. They emphasized that no final funeral date has been approved, as discussions with traditional authorities are still ongoing.
The family outlined several reasons why a December funeral is impossible, including ongoing autopsy and investigations in Ghana and Germany, critical academic examinations for some of the late singer’s children abroad, and the need to allow adequate time for international relatives and friends to attend.
They also raised concerns about attempts to rush the burial despite unresolved questions surrounding Daddy Lumba’s death. The statement noted conflicting accounts from key individuals and emphasized that no funeral date should be set until investigations are complete.
The family accused Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu of breaching mediation resolutions and ignoring court directives restricting him from handling funeral funds. They allege he unlawfully withdrew GH¢200,000 from the funeral account at Cal Bank without the knowledge of the direct family. Two others, Ms. Priscilla Ofori and Mr. Collins Owusu Amankwah, were also cited for collaborating in the unauthorized withdrawals.
The family condemned public statements and media interviews suggesting support for the dissolved committee, insisting such actions undermine traditional protocols and disrupt family unity.
They reaffirmed that:
- No approved funeral date exists.
- No individual or dissolved committee has the authority to set a date.
- No funeral funds may be used without the authorization of the newly formed committee.
The direct family has called for calm, urging the public, traditional leaders, and media to disregard all unauthorized funeral announcements. They assured Ghanaians of their commitment to ensuring a dignified funeral and a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Daddy Lumba’s passing.
