Nigerian music star Burna Boy has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remarks about not begging anyone to be his fan, clarifying that the comments were taken out of context and insisting he was only joking.

The Grammy-winning artiste had come under criticism after a viral clip captured him saying he preferred fans who “have money,” a comment that sparked widespread backlash, with many accusing him of disrespecting his supporters.

However, in a series of emotional posts, Burna Boy pushed back, saying the public had twisted a private joke he shared with his band.

According to him, the viral clip was misinterpreted:
“Btw I was joking around with my band about something else. Not necessarily this situation and y’all have spun it as usual saying ‘Burna Boy doesn’t love his fans.’”

Clearly frustrated by the backlash, the singer expressed emotional distress, revealing that he is battling his own struggles but has never sought public sympathy. He said the least his fans could do is show understanding—or leave him alone.

He also lamented what he described as unfair media treatment, saying people rarely amplify his positive actions yet are quick to attack him whenever they think he has made a mistake.

Nonetheless, in a reflective follow-up message, Burna Boy admitted he may not always get things right.

“I sincerely apologise if I’m wrong. I’m not always right but I feel right about this… Anyway, I’m just human,” he wrote.
