The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has unveiled the 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run, a nationwide fitness event set for March 7, 2026, in partnership with Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd. and KGL Group.
The initiative is designed to mark Ghana’s independence in a more engaging and participatory way, shifting the annual commemoration beyond ceremonial parades to a celebration rooted in movement, wellness and national cohesion.
Positioned to become a permanent fixture on the national calendar, the Walk/Run aims to inspire Ghanaians across all ages to embrace a healthier lifestyle while reinforcing the spirit of unity.
At the launch, the Ministry’s Chief Director, Wilhemina Asamoah, described the event as an effort that transcends competition.
“This upcoming event is a powerful movement to foster community engagement, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen unity,” she noted.
Catherine Morton, Race Director at Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd., said the 2026 edition represents a renewed collective commitment. On March 7, she added, “Ghana will take one giant step – not only in commemoration of our independence but in affirmation of our collective health, vitality, and future.”
The symbolic weight of athletics in the country’s history was also highlighted by Andrew Agbo Kitcher, Vice President of Ghana Athletics. He stressed that running has long embodied the nation’s resilience and shared identity.
Ghana Olympic Committee President, Richard Akpokavie, commended the partners behind the initiative for elevating the Independence Day programme with a unifying sporting experience.
NSA Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, also praised the organisers and reaffirmed his full support, emphasising the enduring power of running as a symbol of determination and national pride.
