Mother and two children injured in Klagon building collapse

-

A mother and her two children sustained injuries when a three-storey building collapsed early Wednesday morning at Klagon in the Tema West Municipality.

The collapse, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., sparked panic among residents as parts of the structure fell, trapping the victims beneath the rubble. They were later rescued by emergency responders and taken to the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema for treatment.

Confirming the incident, Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ludwig Teye Totimeh, said the property developer has been summoned to appear before the Assembly.

“We have directed the developer to appear before the Assembly immediately. A committee will also be established to investigate the cause of the collapse and ensure accountability,” Mr. Totimeh stated.

Teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana National Fire Service, and the police are at the scene, clearing debris and assessing damage to nearby structures.

Eyewitnesses described the collapse as frightening. “We heard a heavy noise and saw dust rising. People started shouting and running for help,” one resident recounted.

While investigations are ongoing, locals suspect the use of substandard building materials and weak supervision as possible causes.

Residents have urged authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforce building safety regulations, highlighting the increasing frequency of such incidents in Accra and Tema due to poor construction practices and regulatory lapses.
