Hundreds of mourners, including family members, friends, gospel musicians, church leaders, and fans, gathered in Asuofua in the Ashanti Region to bid a final farewell to veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, who was laid to rest on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The atmosphere at the funeral was heavy with grief as people struggled to hold back tears while paying their last respects to a man many described as a “voice of hope” in Ghana’s gospel music industry.

From early morning, the Asuofua Town Park filled with mourners who came from across the country to celebrate his life and legacy. The ceremony featured a lying in state, burial service, and final rites, all marked by emotional tributes and renditions of some of his most beloved gospel songs.

Family members described him as humble, committed to his ministry, and deeply devoted to his calling. Many said his passing has created a huge void not only in their family but in the gospel music fraternity.

“He lived a life of purpose and touched so many souls through his music,” one family member said tearfully.

Friends and colleagues also shared fond memories, recalling his passion for music and his dedication to encouraging believers through song. Some recounted how his music remained a source of strength for many during difficult times.

As part of the burial arrangements, a thanksgiving service is expected to be held on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Sokoban Ampayoo, followed by a family gathering to conclude the final funeral rites.

Yaw Sarpong, who passed away on January 20, 2026, at the Emena Hospital after battling illness, leaves behind a legacy spanning more than four decades in gospel music.

Born into humble beginnings, he began his musical journey with the Methodist singing group at Asuofua before being discovered in 1971, a turning point that eventually shaped his lifelong ministry in music.

Over the years, he released several gospel classics that became widely popular across Ghana and beyond, inspiring faith and hope in many lives.

Despite his success, he once revealed in an interview that financial reward did not match the impact of his work, noting that many of his albums were not adequately compensated.

Still, his influence remained strong, with many describing him as one of the most impactful gospel voices of his generation.

As he was finally laid to rest, mourners said his music, humility, and devotion to God would continue to live on in the hearts of many.
