A moment of escalated tension erupted at the Nyage police checkpoint in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region on Monday, October 13, 2025.

One of the policemen stationed at the checkpoint is alleged to have shot a Samyong minibus with registration number AS 7089-12, carrying goods from Tamale to Sawla.

According to the driver, Braimah Inusah, the incident occurred after he was stopped by officers for inspection.

He told Adom News that the police demanded to see the invoice covering the goods, which he produced. The officers then ordered him to offload the items, a directive he complied with.

He alleged that while reloading the goods, he saw some officers carrying some of the items away, prompting him to question their actions.

“When I asked why they were taking the goods to their sitting area, one of them became angry and fired three shots into my front tyre before trying to handcuff me,” he recounted.

Mr. Inusah said he resisted arrest initially but was later taken to the Sawla Police Station.

Officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Sawla who arrived at the scene to intervene were also reportedly assaulted.

The union’s organiser, known as Believer, said the officers prevented them from approaching, threatening to shoot anyone who came closer.

“They beat me up, tore my shirt, and one of them even pointed a gun at me. They told us to leave the scene and report to the district police station instead,” he said.

Believer accused the police, who were originally deployed to maintain peace following the Gbeniyiri conflict, of extorting money from drivers.

“Peace has been restored in Sawla, yet the officers at the Nyage barrier continue to harass drivers and passengers,” he added.

An Adom News journalist who visited the scene to report on the incident was also allegedly attacked.

The officers reportedly seized her mobile phone after she interviewed a GPRTU official. The journalist said the police warned that no one was allowed to take photos or videos of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Savannah Regional Police Command has reportedly invited the driver to provide a formal statement as part of ongoing investigations.
