Qualifying for 2026 World Cup is a big achievement – Ghana coach Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has hailed Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a “big achievement,” emphasizing that the success belongs to the entire nation rather than to him alone.

Ghana booked their place at next year’s global showpiece after a tense 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Mohammed Kudus’ decisive strike in the 47th minute sealed the win and confirmed Ghana’s position at the top of Group I, securing automatic qualification.

Reflecting on the achievement, Addo admitted that reaching consecutive World Cups was personally meaningful but was quick to highlight the collective effort that made it possible.

“For me, personally, surely it’s [qualifying for the World Cup twice in a row] a big achievement,” Addo said after the game. “But to be honest, I think more about us.”

The 49-year-old coach, who also guided Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, becomes the first to lead the Black Stars to back-to-back qualifications.

He credited the players, technical team, football administrators, and supporters for their unity and commitment throughout the campaign.

“It’s good for us, for everyone, for every Ghanaian. It’s good for the players, not only for me, so this is the most important thing,” he added.

Ghana’s qualification sparked celebrations across the country and drew tributes from football figures around the world. FIFA President Gianni Infantino sent a congratulatory message, praising Ghana’s passion and its enduring contribution to the global game.

The four-time African champions will be making their fifth World Cup appearance since debuting in 2006.

With qualification now secured, focus turns to preparations for the 2026 tournament, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The official draw will take place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

After a disappointing group-stage exit in Qatar, the Black Stars will be eager to make a stronger impression when they step onto football’s biggest stage once again next summer.
