The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and allied groups have announced plans to stage a demonstration against what they describe as the unlawful takeover of lands allocated for lorry stations at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area in Accra by private investors.
The march has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 16.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, disclosed that the union will present a petition to government at the presidency.
The aggrieved groups seek to petition the government to intervene and protect the land earmarked for commercial transport operations.
The Concerned Drivers Association has thrown its weight behind the protest, with its President, William Osei, urging drivers to park their vehicles in solidarity, a move expected to disrupt transport services and commuter traffic across the city.
Organisers say the demonstration aims to send a clear message to private investors and government about the severity of the situation.
Market women have also joined the campaign, voicing fears that losing the lorry station lands will destroy their livelihoods.
They have appealed to the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and First Lady, Lordina Mahama, to step in and halt the projects, warning that thousands of traders and informal workers would be displaced if the takeover goes ahead.
