Asante Kotoko have suffered an early-season setback after striker Kwame Opoku was ruled out for four to six weeks with an ankle injury.
Opoku was forced off just 20 minutes into Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League opener against Berekum Chelsea on Saturday at the Golden City Park.
Medical assessments later confirmed that the former USM Algiers forward sustained an ankle problem requiring up to six weeks of recovery.
His absence comes at a critical time for the Porcupine Warriors, who face a busy domestic and continental schedule. Opoku will miss their CAF Confederation Cup clash with Nigeria’s Kwara United at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 21.
Despite losing their talisman, Kotoko managed to secure a historic 1-0 victory over Chelsea, with Albert Amoah’s 80th-minute strike ending a 15-year winless run at the Golden City Park. The injury leaves Kotoko short of firepower as they aim to maintain their league form and push for progress in Africa.
