Both sides are wrong, but… – Kwabena Agyepong on Abronye’s arrest [Audio]

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwabena Agyepong, has described both the conduct of Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, and the state’s handling of his recent arrest as troubling.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Agyepong said while Abronye’s behaviour fell short of the standards expected of a regional chairman, the manner in which law enforcement responded also raised serious questions.

“As a regional chairman, there is a certain level of conduct expected of you. Some of the things he did were clearly beneath that standard. But if the solution is arrest and prosecution, then we should ask why others who have done worse have been treated differently,” he argued.

Mr. Agyepong cited the case of U.S.-based broadcaster Kevin Taylor, who was recently in Ghana and had his legal issues quickly cleared by the Supreme Court.

“Does he not insult more than this? Yet his case was fast-tracked and resolved,” he pointed out.

The former NPP General Secretary warned that Ghana risks building a system of selective justice if the law is not applied fairly across the board.

“We should be setting standards. But if we don’t take care, the law will only be used selectively, and that undermines our democracy,” he cautioned.

Kwame Baffoe Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, on charges of offensive conduct and breach of peace. His arrest has triggered debates within political and civil society circles about the balance between enforcing standards of public behaviour and ensuring due process.

Kwabena Agyepong, who has positioned himself as a voice for discipline and reform within the NPP, is among several party stalwarts vying to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

His comments add to growing calls for consistency in the application of the law, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
