The arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has stirred controversy in Ghana’s political arena.
Abronye was picked up by police after alleging that President John Dramani Mahama was plotting a coup in collaboration with Al Qaeda militants.
Police investigations dismissed the claims as false and potentially disruptive to public order, leading to charges of publishing false news and offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
Reacting to the development, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Akwesi Acquah, questioned the timing and intent of the arrest, describing it as politically motivated.
He urged the President to intervene and cautioned against using state security agencies to target individuals who criticize public officials.
While stressing the need to protect national security, Mr. Acquah maintained that freedom of speech is equally critical to Ghana’s democratic credentials.
He noted that the case tests the country’s ability to balance peace and civil liberties.
Meanwhile, the NPP has declared its support for Abronye DC, with the party’s National Youth Organizer, Henry Salam Mustapha, expressing dissatisfaction with the police action.
