EC officials begin sorting of electoral materials ahead of Akwatia by-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) officials in Akwatia on Monday evening began sorting electoral materials for distribution to polling stations ahead of Tuesday’s by-election.

The exercise, conducted under heavy security, formed part of final preparations to ensure that all voting materials are dispatched promptly to polling centres.

EC officials explained that the process was being carried out openly to enhance transparency and build public confidence in the election’s integrity. Political party representatives and election observers were present to monitor the activity.

The Akwatia by-election has drawn nationwide attention, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) both fielding candidates in what is expected to be a keenly contested race.

Meanwhile, efforts by the National Peace Council to secure a peace pact between the two main parties ahead of the polls suffered a setback.

At a scheduled meeting at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Akwatia, the NPP refused to accept the NDC’s representatives, insisting that constituency executives rather than national-level officers should have been presented to sign the accord.

In a related development, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu was seen giving a final briefing to police personnel deployed for the by-election.
