Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has described illegal mining (galamsey) activities under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration as the worst the country has ever witnessed.

According to him, the menace has led to the destruction of economic trees and serious environmental degradation. He has called for an immediate declaration of a state of emergency to curb the situation.

“The way galamsey is going on is worse under President John Mahama. Something needs to be done urgently. Our economic trees are being cut down by illegal miners,” Glover said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem.

Meanwhile, several operations are ongoing in the fight against illegal mining.

The Western Region recently recorded another success with the arrest of twelve suspected illegal miners and the destruction of twenty-five changfa machines in a joint operation conducted by the Western Regional Security Council.

Additionally, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested four soldiers for conducting illegal mining activities at Simpa Junction in the Tarkwa Nsuaem District of the Western Region.
