Burial of Muslim victims from helicopter crash postponed due to condition of bodies – Suhuyini

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has revealed that plans for the swift burial of the Muslim victims of Wednesday’s military helicopter crash have been put on hold due to the state of the remains.

Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Mr Suhuyini said that although initial arrangements were made to bury the deceased Muslims in accordance with Islamic customs, which require burial within 24 hours, the condition of the bodies made it impossible.

“The information earlier was that, because of Islamic tradition, the Muslims among them were to be buried today,” he explained.

“But after the actual state of the remains was determined, it became clear to all that it would be practically impossible.”

He added that once this was realized, families and relevant stakeholders were informed, and the planned burials were suspended until further examinations could be conducted.

“A gap has been created, and these comrades that have fallen, I dare say, are irreplaceable,” he stated.

The tragic crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and other senior government and military officials.

A funeral planning committee has since been established by the government to coordinate memorial and burial arrangements. National flags remain at half-mast as the country observes a period of mourning.
