A 27-year-old man is in police custody in the Upper East Region after a military patrol recovered an AK-47 assault rifle and 31 rounds of live ammunition from his room at Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku.
The Upper East Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest of Abdul Basit in a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, following an operation by a military patrol team in the area.
According to the police, the patrol team was operating in Sakabo when personnel heard gunshots.
They moved towards the source of the sound and saw Basit running into a room. The team pursued him, arrested him, and searched the room, where the rifle and ammunition were found.
The police said Basit admitted during interrogation that the weapon and ammunition belonged to him.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has taken over the case from the military and is leading investigations.
Basit remains in custody and is expected to be put before a court to face charges of unlawful possession of an offensive weapon.
