Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has announced that 10,000 National Service personnel will undergo training under the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme starting August 2025.
Providing an update on the defence sector at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah said the initiative aims to equip participants with critical skills in security, disaster preparedness, and public safety.
“The basic military and emergency response training is a six-week orientation scheduled to run in two batches from August to October this year,” he explained.
The minister clarified that participation in the programme is voluntary and not mandatory. “They are volunteers; it is not compulsory,” he stressed.
Training modules will include basic military orientation, first aid, basic life support, disaster and fire management, nationalism, patriotism, mentorship, and leadership.
Dr. Boamah noted that while the programme will initially involve 10,000 personnel, there are plans to expand participation in subsequent years.
“The core objective is to equip National Service personnel with relevant skills to support security efforts and respond effectively to emergencies,” he added.
