South Africa coach Desiree Ellis praises Black Queens despite 2-0 defeat

South Africa head coach Desiree Ellis has lauded the Black Queens despite her team’s 2-0 victory in their Group C opener at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Although Ghana fell short in the match, Ellis was impressed by their resilience and overall quality.

“Take nothing away from Ghana, they are still a quality side,” she said.

“The first 15 minutes could have changed the game if we had conceded, but we stuck in and around, took control, and got the results that we wanted,” Ellis added.

Following this win, Banyana Banyana will now prepare for their next Group C clash against Tanzania on Friday, 11 July, as they look to secure progression to the tournament’s knockout stages.

Meanwhile, Ghana will face Mali on the same day at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, with kickoff set for 16:00 GMT.
