Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has highlighted the significance of Ghana’s history in youth football as the team prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, while urging his players to channel expectation into motivation rather than pressure.

Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal national under-17 football team and South Africa national under-17 football team in what is expected to be a highly competitive group.

Speaking to CAFOnline, Ogum acknowledged Ghana’s strong reputation at junior level and the responsibility that comes with it.

“It is very important because Ghana has always been recognised as one of the strongest nations in youth football,” he said.

He also pointed to Ghana’s rich tradition in youth competitions, stressing that the current generation has an opportunity to build its own legacy on the continental stage.

“The Black Starlets have created great memories in the past, and this current generation has an opportunity to write its own chapter in history.”

While recognising the weight of expectation, Ogum insisted the focus remains on development and identity rather than pressure.

“We constantly remind the players about the legacy they are carrying, but at the same time, we encourage them to focus on creating their own identity and success story.”

The Black Starlets open their campaign against Algeria at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

Ghana head into the tournament hoping to re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite at U-17 level, with belief in the camp carefully balanced with a strong emphasis on discipline and focus.
