Birim North Youth demand jobs from Zijin Mining, reject MRI recruitment condition

The youth in ten affected communities within the Birim North Municipality are calling on Zijin Mining Company to prioritise employing locals to address the growing unemployment in the area.

According to the aggrieved youth, the company’s current recruitment process—particularly the MRI requirement—has proven unfavourable for many residents, leaving them excluded from job opportunities.

They are appealing to Zijin Mining to consider direct recruitment of locals without the MRI condition as a way of reducing the high unemployment rate among the youth in the district.

The group has given the mining company a deadline of Monday to respond positively to their concerns or risk unspecified actions from the communities.

“We feel Zijin is not cooperating with us. If by Monday nothing is done, we will be forced to advise ourselves,” a spokesperson for the youth warned.

The ten communities have vowed to continue pushing for fair employment opportunities, insisting that as host communities, their youth deserve priority in recruitment.
