Richard Asare Baffour, legal counsel for former traditional priestess turned evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has strongly criticised the 15-year jail sentence handed to his client, describing it as unfair and influenced by public sentiment.
Nana Agradaa was sentenced by the Circuit Court in Accra on Thursday, July 3, after being found guilty of offences including charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.
According to the court, she misled viewers during a televised broadcast in 2022 by claiming to possess spiritual powers capable of multiplying money. Several individuals, lured by her promises, reportedly gave her large sums of money with the expectation of receiving double in return—returns which never materialised.
Speaking on Citi FM, Mr Baffour Awuah argued that the ruling was excessively harsh and shaped more by Nana Agradaa’s controversial public image than the legal facts of the case.
“We are of the view that Nana Agradaa was punished not for her actions, but for her identity,” he said. “She has been vocal on social media, used provocative language, and clashed with many people. These factors, we believe, played a role in the final judgment.”
He described the verdict as a “miscarriage of justice” and alleged that bias had undermined the fairness of the trial.
Mr Baffour Awuah added that the legal team is reviewing the court’s decision and considering all legal avenues, including a possible appeal.
