Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku believes representing the Porcupine Warriors offers the ideal preparation for playing at the senior national level.
Opoku, who first earned a Black Stars call-up under then-head coach CK Akonnor, recently returned to the national team for the Unity Cup matches in London after rejoining Kotoko in the latter part of the 2024/25 season.
The 26-year-old featured in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, playing 45 minutes in the friendly encounter held in London.
Reflecting on his national team experience, Opoku told Kotoko’s media team that playing for the Reds is just as demanding as turning out for the national team.
“Me having an opportunity to play with the national team feels like I don’t see any difference between the two because Kotoko is a big club,” he said. “Playing for Kotoko rather prepares you to play for the national team; even at the national team, I tell them Kotoko is Ghana’s Barcelona… because it’s a team that everybody wishes to play for so far as you are playing in Ghana,” he added.
Opoku registered 11 goal contributions in 17 appearances for Kotoko during the season, underlining his importance to the team.
