Immediate past President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Abraham Neequaye, has launched a blistering attack on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, calling for his immediate resignation.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday following his own resignation from the GBA, Mr. Neequaye accused the Minister and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, of political interference and a lack of transparency in sports governance.
A major point of concern for the former GBA boss was the government’s handling of the report into the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, who died in Ghana after a bout.
Neequaye questioned why the Sports Ministry had failed to share the findings of the report with key stakeholders, including the GBA, the Nigeria Boxing Control Board, and the media.
“After the Sports Minister received the report on the death of Gabriel Oluwasegun, he was supposed to share it with the GBA. Why is he hiding it?” Neequaye queried.
“He should have shared it with the Nigeria Boxing Control Board. Why hasn’t he? He should have released it to the media. Why is he the only one with access and now talking about reforms?”
He accused the Minister and the NSA Director-General of sidelining the GBA and using politics to interfere in the affairs of boxing in the country.
“The boxing family is bigger than both the Minister and the Director-General. If they are honourable men, they should resign,” Neequaye said emphatically.
Following his resignation, Neequaye officially handed over his duties to the GBA’s Second Vice President, Roger Banor.
