The government, through the Ministry of the Interior, has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the Republic Day celebration.
The announcement fulfills a campaign promise by the Mahama-led administration to reinstate July 1 as a statutory public holiday, restoring its historical significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens’ Day in Ghana.
Although Republic Day falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the holiday has been shifted to Friday following the passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, by Parliament on Wednesday.
In line with the amendment, all midweek holidays—those falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays—will now be observed on the nearest Friday.
“The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, 1st July 2025, is Republic Day,” the Ministry noted in a statement.
“However, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, by Executive Instrument (E.I.), and in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601), has declared Friday, 4th July 2025, as a public holiday.”
Meanwhile, July 1 will also be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, providing an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s progress and express gratitude.
