Herbert Mensah urges GFA to take concrete action against hooliganism

Former Asante Kotoko chairman and current President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to curb hooliganism in local football.

Mensah’s comments come amid growing concerns over fan violence, which continues to taint the sport in Ghana.

One tragic incident during the just-ended football season led to the death of an Asante Kotoko supporter.

In an interview with Joy Sports for an upcoming documentary titled Scars of Hooliganism, Mensah criticised the GFA for what he described as a lack of meaningful action.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) themselves have got to stop talking so much and do more,” he said.

He stressed the importance of adopting effective measures already in use in other footballing nations, noting the critical role of accountability and enforcement.

“[The FA should] put in the same measures that have been put in around the world.

“The clubs have a sense of responsibility — they have to. You see abroad where people receive life bans. There are cameras in place to pick things up,” he added.

Mensah’s call adds to mounting pressure on football authorities in Ghana to address hooliganism with greater urgency and resolve.
