Former Germany international Gerald Asamoah has voiced skepticism about the possibility of an African nation winning the FIFA World Cup in the near future.
The closest the continent has come to lifting football’s most prestigious trophy was in 2022, when Morocco made history by reaching the semifinals. Despite their remarkable run, the Atlas Lions fell short, losing to Croatia in the third-place playoff.
Asamoah, who was born in Ghana but represented Germany during his career, highlighted the persistent challenges African teams face on the global stage.
“I want to see this before I leave the earth, but it is not going to be easy,” he said, as reported by Joy Sports
“It is about teamwork, and this is a problem Africans have. We have always had some issues in the team,” he added.
Aside from Morocco’s semifinal appearance, Ghana and Senegal have both made it as far as the quarter-finals in past tournaments but failed to progress further.
The next FIFA World Cup is set for 2026 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Qualification matches are ongoing, with Ghana’s Black Stars currently leading Group I with 15 points. They are scheduled to face Chad and Mali in crucial qualifiers this September.
