Environmental Health Officer for Nkwanta South Municipal in the Volta Region, Cynthia Sekyere has revealed that three out of every 10 food vendors in the Municipality is battling with hepatitis B.

The situation, she says is dangerous and could cause more harm if proper monitoring is not done.

She describes the situation as very alarming and needs urgent attention.

The Environmental Health Officer attributed the situation to poor sanitation and the failure of these people to seek proper medical attention.

She says people in the area do not get access to potable water, engaged in open defecation and improper hygiene in the homes which worsen some of these medical conditions.

Cynthia Sekyere disclosed that, previously typhoid fever was leading with over 2,000 cases but added that through the kind intervention of World Vision “WASH” program they have helped provide good water to some communities and sanitation sensitization and has helped five communities to build their own household latrines.

These five communities are now open defecation free.

She explained more of the challenges facing the Municipality and other benefits World Vision has given them.

Cynthia Sekyere was grateful to World Vision for their timely intervention.

She, however, asked the Municipality to adopt a sustainable character to sustain the few interventions by World Vision.
