The Ghana High Commission in Ottawa has urged Ghanaians and other travellers heading to Canada for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to familiarise themselves with the country’s strict food import regulations to avoid delays, confiscations, or other inconveniences at the border.
In a public notice issued ahead of the tournament, the High Commission highlighted guidance released by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for visitors travelling to Canada between June 11 and July 19, 2026, for the FIFA World Cup, which is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
According to the notice, travellers are required to take note of Canada’s regulations governing the importation of food, plants and animal products into the country.
The High Commission warned that several food items commonly carried by travellers may be restricted or prohibited under Canadian law.
“Certain food items are prohibited, such as meat, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. These restrictions are in place to prevent the introduction of plant pests and animal diseases. Failure to comply may result in confiscation and disposal of items at the border,” the notice stated.
Officials say the measures form part of Canada’s broader efforts to protect its agricultural sector, food systems and biodiversity from potentially harmful pests and diseases that may be introduced through imported products.
The High Commission therefore encouraged travellers to verify all applicable requirements before embarking on their journeys.
“Visitors are strongly encouraged to review the official requirements before travelling to avoid inconveniences,” the notice added.
The mission also directed travellers to consult official Canadian government resources for detailed information on what items can and cannot be brought into the country.
With thousands of football fans expected to travel across North America during the month-long tournament, the High Commission stressed the importance of complying fully with the regulations to ensure smooth entry into Canada.
“The High Commission urges all travellers to comply fully with these regulations to ensure a smooth entry into Canada,” the statement said.
The advisory comes as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is expected to attract millions of visitors to host cities across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
