Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew believes Ghana is on the brink of a major breakthrough as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that years of challenges and disappointment will soon give way to success.
The senior national team is gearing up for the global showpiece, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with hopes of making a significant impact on the world stage.
Speaking to GFA Media, Ayew reflected on his journey with the Black Stars, describing the national team as a major part of his football career and stressing his desire to experience winning moments once again.
“Obviously, the Black Stars have given me a lot. A lot, in the sense that I have had a lot of good moments in the Black Stars, especially in my early days. I want to get that feeling back, and to get that feeling back is only by winning. So we need to start winning,” Ayew said.
The 34-year-old admitted that securing qualification for the World Cup rekindled some optimism but insisted that greater achievements lie ahead for the team.
“I had that feeling a little bit when we qualified for the World Cup, but I know there’s more to come. There’s something coming. There’s something on the way. So I know if we keep on pushing, we will be rewarded because we’ve suffered in the last two, three, four years. It’s not been easy with Ghanaians,” he added.
Ghana face a stern challenge in Group L, where they have been drawn alongside England, Croatia and Panama in what many consider one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.
The Black Stars have already arrived in the United States to begin the final phase of their preparations. Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before taking on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their group-stage journey will conclude with a crucial clash against Croatia on June 27.
As part of their build-up to the tournament, Otto Addo’s side will play an international friendly against Jamaica on June 10, offering the technical team one final opportunity to fine-tune preparations before the World Cup gets underway.
With expectations mounting among supporters, Ayew’s message is one of patience and belief, as the Black Stars captain remains convinced that brighter days are ahead for Ghanaian football.
