President John Dramani Mahama has delivered an emotional message of encouragement to Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, as they prepare to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto.
The four-time African champions will open their Group L campaign at BMO Field, with kick-off set for 23:00 GMT, marking Ghana’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest global tournament.
In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, by the Presidency Communications Directorate, President Mahama congratulated the team for qualifying for the tournament, describing the achievement as a symbol of national resilience and Ghana’s enduring football legacy.
He reminded the players of the huge responsibility they carry, noting that they represent the hopes and aspirations of over 30 million Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
The President also highlighted the unifying power of football, pointing to support from communities across the country, from Chorkor to Bole, and the sense of national pride generated by the team’s journey.
Mahama further called on Ghanaian supporters in North America, especially those in Toronto and surrounding areas, to rally behind the team and create a strong presence in the stands as the “12th man.”
He also disclosed that government is working to secure broadcasting arrangements to ensure that Ghanaians across the country can follow the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign.
In his closing remarks, President Mahama urged the team to remain disciplined, believe in themselves, and play with pride for the nation and for future generations inspired by their journey.
“Go Black Stars,” the statement concluded.

Ghana begin their campaign against Panama before facing England on 23 June at Gillette Stadium and Croatia on 27 June, with hopes of reaching the knockout stages for the first time since their 2010 quarter-final run in South Africa.
