Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, has expressed strong confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to make Ghana proud at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana are set to make their fifth appearance at the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer.
The Black Stars head into the competition under new leadership following a change in the technical setup, with former head coach Otto Addo dismissed after consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany during the team’s preparation campaign. He has since been replaced on a short-term basis by Carlos Queiroz.
Despite recent setbacks, Mortagbe believes the team is moving in the right direction under the experienced Portuguese tactician.
Speaking on Asaase Radio, he highlighted the blend of experienced and emerging talent within the squad, describing Queiroz as a leader capable of steadying and inspiring the national team.
“We have belief in the work being done… we expect the team to make Ghana proud,” he said.
He portrayed Queiroz as a “father figure” whose international experience could be crucial as Ghana seeks to overcome inconsistencies and compete strongly at the tournament.
According to Mortagbe, lessons from previous competitions have been factored into preparations, while increased competition for places is expected to raise performance levels within the squad.
He also pointed to the emergence of a clearer football identity for the Black Stars, centred on a philosophy the GFA describes as “agoro with purpose” — combining Ghana’s traditional flair with greater attacking efficiency.
“It’s not just about playing… the end result has to be goals,” he added.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, before facing England in Boston on June 23 and concluding the group stage against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, Ghana will play international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as Queiroz continues to shape his squad for the assignment ahead.
