Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed strong confidence in his team ahead of Ghana’s opening fixture at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana will begin their Group D campaign against tournament debutants Cape Verde today at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with the Swedish tactician backing his players to make a positive start.
Speaking at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Björkegren praised the commitment, tactical awareness and determination within his squad, insisting that the Black Queens are ready to compete at the highest level.
“We will see a Black Queens team that will go for the attack. I will say we are the best high-pressing team in Africa. I know we have a strong defence. I really believe in this group of girls. They will do everything to win the game,” the Swedish coach said.
The Black Queens, who secured a bronze medal at the previous edition of the WAFCON, are aiming for a strong tournament as they seek not only continental success but also qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year.
After facing Cape Verde, Ghana will continue their Group D campaign against Cameroon on Sunday, August 2, 2026, before concluding the group stage with a clash against Mali on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
With renewed ambition and a squad determined to make an impact, Björkegren believes the Black Queens have the quality and mentality required to challenge Africa’s best.
