The eight suspected killers of Major Maxwell Mahama who were arraigned last Friday included the snail seller who allegedly gave a false alarm that led to the lynching of the army officer.

The snail seller, whose name was given as Akosua Takyiwaa, aka Maame Bono, is said to have raised the false alarm by calling the Assembly Member for the Denkyira Obuasi, who mobilized people to allegedly kill the soldier.

The arrest of the eight has brought the number of suspects picked up by the police in connection with the gruesome murder to 52

They have all been remanded in prison custody.

Captain Mahama had reportedly stopped to buy snails, and when he took money from his pocket to pay for the snails, the trader saw the pistol and reportedly informed the assemblyman of Denkyira Obuasi that the young military officer was an armed robber.

This was made known two weeks ago at a joint press conference by the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

According to the police, without verifying the identity of Captain Mahama, the assemblyman and armed townsfolk accosted the military officers, gave him a chase, shot at him, and eventually pounced on him using cement blocks, clubs, among others, until he died around 10am on Monday, two hours after he had started the jogging.

  1. This lady has committed no crime. She has seen a stranger with a pistol and lawfully reported to the Assembly man probably in the absence of a police station.

    • You don’t lawfully report to assembly man, you report to the police. They are trained and know what to do to arrest a citizen who has committed a crime. Assembly man is not a police officer or a law enforcement agent.

      • I bet, if you are asked to dial the phone number to your nearest police station, you can’t. Lets be realistic, the lady is not to be blamed for anything. Imagine a common snail seller had the sense to report a stranger with a gun to her superior (community leader) of what she has seen. i don’t think there was nothing wrong with that.
If we want to have a ROOT cause analysis the issue then it must not start from the snail seller. Sorry to say that the Late Capt. initiated this whole thing by carrying his gun just for a jog which was unprofessional.
I condemn his killing 100% and all those directly involved but wouldn’t cast any evil on the snail seller.

    • Raising a false alarm is a crime by itself. So before any one raises any alarm, the person must make sure that what he/she is suspecting has some amount of truth. Then raising a false alarm that brings harm to some one is also a crime. In this case she raised a false alarm to the Assembly man who also acting on her false alarm did not check the true fact in the alarm and just went ahead to mobilize a group of people to kill. Considering the time the Maj. was killed, it was a day light and she was selling snails by the roadside, quite dubious in their claim.
Furthermore, the Maj. was head shouting am not an armed robber yet they went ahead to kill- quite dubby. With the number that came around could they not have arrested and sent him to the Police as they came with guns, stones, sticks, cutlasses, etc. without his ability to run away.

      • The Snail seller raised an alarm of seeing a stranger with a Gun. Lets remember then that the Late Capt. was on civilian cloth. there was no indication of whatsoever that the person was a military man.
What is an Alarm anyway? “an anxious awareness of danger” she felt it by seeing the GUN.
For christ sake, lets put ourselves in that ladies condition as a citizen than rather associating it to ” the means justifies the end” vice verse scenario.

    • Armed robber would never show at a day light his gun to people. And he would never stop to buy something by paying and said he would come back to pick it up.
      Never.

      • My bro I agree with you, true talk and correct point you’ve come up with, how can an armed robber show his gun to the public, I will continue to ask this question that for how long have they see an armed robber jogging on the street and if yes, how was the reaction?

    • Logical reasoning will tell you she hasten in conclusion…. N that she should be blamed.. If you see a gun from someone it means e person is am armed robber… Then we can not count e arm robbers in Ghana… So she should face e law

    • I agree with u 100 percent. Is this not the same police who said we should be vigilant and report and suspected robber to the police or an appropriate quarters, that’s exactly what she did. I see no reason why she should find herself at the wrong side of the law

  2. Did the snail seller assumed Captain Maxwell was going to rob her? Why didn’t the assemblyman stop the gangsters from chasing him? The Captain didn’t threat anyone. The assemblyman should have ask the Captain questions. I am assuming that the assemblyman is aware of projects that are going on in his district.

  3. SHE CAUSED THE WHOLE INCIDENT, IF SHE HADN’T GIVEN THE ASSEMBLY MAN THE WRONG INFO, HE WONT HAVE BEEN LYNCHED. HOW CAN AN ARM ROBBER BUY SNAIL AND SAY HE WILL COME AND PICK IT WHEN COMING BACK, AND WHAT IA AN ARM ROBBER GOING TO STEAL IN THE MORNING.

  4. so even if you are a villager should u go to the exent that seeing a pistol on a his poket u should raise such alarm look at her face bi . Dont spare her at all

  5. Kofi you are right she didn’t commit any offence, then is now in the hands of the assembly basterds to verify is identity before lynching him.. Anyway kill all associated with the killing

  6. That’s d truth guus, I think all dis was planned n it also depend on wat d assembly man had told d people, maybe to call him when dey see anyone like dat cos if u see an armed robber with a gun re u safe in d hands of an assembly man or a police n wat I keep asking myself is dat “did d capt try to steal from her?” Hmmmmmm “he who raises a sword must die by a sword” “do unto others wat u want dem to do unto u”. D law must apply this saying to judge dis murder case

  7. Every citizen has the right to be a security conscience, even the police always tell the residents to alert them for any strange movement within the area, so I can stand on this point and proof the lady no guilty, there are many people in Ghana who can not be able to call police in case of any incident both literate and illiterate, the assembly man whom she reported to was the right person who can saved the officer, don’t blame the lady.

  8. Kofi I’m with you, if the captain was in uniform with the gun, I don’t think that the woman would have raised alarm. The woman was afraid and never wanted to take chances. Why couldn’t the major convinced the snail seller alone with his ID and pictures from his phone

  9. Please let us call a space a space, well it’s unfortunate, but I think we are going too far as the son and daughters of Lord, as usual so many robbers attacked innocent peoples without considering as day or night. So let us stop blaming this woman because she is innocent and since Mahama was innocent. Please the Bible says “Judge Not”.

  10. Given false alarm is a crime, because you’d can’t just wake up & pronounced that someone is an armed robber because the person is holding weapon. Let’s the law decide….. Thanks

  11. Please guys, the officials are not telling us the truth. How many kilometres did the Maj. jog before getting to the place. All this story they are telling us is not true, dig well and you will know what am talking about.

  12. The death of the gentleman is painful and sad.By the way,the assembly man was her immediate contact she could reach.Let remember there was a robbery the previous day or so.
So she suspected something fishy, there was nothing wrong she reported to her assembly man.
Secondly,Mr.Mahama wasn’t in a uniform,if he were to be in a uniform with a gun, there was no way the lady would have reported him.
I don’t think the ever prayed for his death.
This is unfortunate for both major Mahama and the the said lady

  13. It’s rather unfortunate this should happen, seeing a stranger thinking the person is an arm rubber then we should go ahead lynching hunters in the country because they go about holding guns and other offensive weapons without wearing uniforms or holding identity cards. Ghanaians we stand and condemn to this barbaric act, raising false alarm is an offence by itself. However we saw in the video with people holding guns are they also security personnel. Am on the view that, the perpetrators must be dealt with to serve deterrent to others

  14. A police man was also shot by His fellow colleagues who also took him to be an armed robber while he was on duty in a VIP bus jus to protect the passengers, who left behind a wife and a baby who is about a year old….no police officer has even visited the widow and a whole ASP was able to open his dirty mouth to say that where the widow leaves(Kintampo) is to far to visit her….

  15. My fellow people why are we being ignorant from the truth. That witchcraft raised force alarm and that alone is a crime according to our constitution. Her illiteracy had course her and she must be punish severely.

  16. Eeeeiii…HV u guys looked at it from de other angle DAT dey cud HV planted de snail seller to do such a tin??because.. DAT wasn’t de first tym de soldier had step his foot on DAT village

  17. If we are not careful as people this country every citizen will not even report or alert the security agency’s if they see anything for the fear being arrested as the once giving fake alarms..

  18. He had a gun on him, if truly he was an armed robber why would he pay for the snails whiles he can threaten you to give it to him with the gun. She must be dealt with mercilessly

  19. If it has,nt happen to you, then is good, but if the military happened to be your real brother,it would had been a different story.Lets sympathize with the dead, because they would,nt be alive to tell their story, prosperity will judge all those involve in this gruesome murder.
