The General Secretary of the Techiman-Krobo Youth Association, Gyan Isaac Kentinka, has questioned why the Principal of the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Hellen Dwamena, remains in office while the institution has been closed pending investigations into recent protests and allegations against her administration.
According to Mr Kentinka, the Principal’s continued presence at the institution raises concerns, particularly after students staged a demonstration over issues surrounding her leadership.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kentinka said the community subsequently held a press conference to formally raise its concerns and petitioned the relevant authorities.
He said the Minister of Health later constituted a committee to investigate the issues, and he appeared before the committee to provide information on the concerns raised by the community.
However, Mr Kentinka said the Principal continues to report to work despite the ongoing investigation.
“We all know what happened at Techiman-Krobo. The nursing training students demonstrated against the principal. As a community, we held a press conference to express our grievances,” he said.
“The Health Minister instituted a committee, and I appeared before the committee with all the information I know. The woman is still at post working,” he added.
Mr Kentinka further alleged that the Principal recently directed tutors to return to the school to upload students’ results, but the teachers declined.
He attributed their refusal to what he claimed were outstanding allowances owed by the school’s management.
“While ago she sent letters to the teachers to come and upload the results of the students and they all refused,” he said.
“Because she even owes the allowances, and they are requesting for it but she has refused to pay. So they also said they won’t come,” he added.
The Youth Association General Secretary said the community had called for the Principal to step aside while investigations were ongoing, arguing that her continued stay in office could undermine confidence in the process.
“Ahead of the committee’s work, we demanded that the woman should step aside pending the investigation,” he said.
Mr Kentinka also criticised the decision to close the institution, saying he raised concerns about the measure when he appeared before the investigative committee.
“So I even raised concerns when I appeared before the committee that the outright closure of the school was wrong,” he stated.
The controversy follows a protest by students of the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College over concerns about the administration of the institution.
The protest subsequently attracted the attention of the community and authorities, leading to the establishment of an investigative committee by the Health Ministry.
Mr Kentinka is now demanding clarity on the Principal’s status and the rationale for allowing her to remain at post while the school remains closed and investigations continue.
He maintained that the concerns raised by the students and community must be addressed transparently, with the findings of the investigation guiding the appropriate action.
