Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has criticised the lack of publicity surrounding the start of the new Ghana Premier League season.
Mr Adams said football clubs and organisers had failed to create enough excitement around the league or build recognisable stars who could attract supporters to matches.
Speaking at the Ghana Football Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer of Excellence in Prampram, the minister asked who fans were expected to watch when the new campaign begins.
”The new Ghana Premier League season is about to start. Who exactly are we asking Ghanaians to come and watch?”
He also questioned the absence of prominent players and personalities whose profiles could be used to promote the domestic game.
”Who is the star? Who is the player every child is talking about? Whose jersey do young supporters want to buy? Who is the personality on the billboard?” he asked.
Mr Adams, who is also the MP for Buem, said Ghanaian clubs were not making sufficient use of the growing number of media and digital platforms available to promote their players and competitions.
He recalled a period when players such as Charles Taylor, Charles “Dong Bortey” Taylor, Ishmael Addo and Stephen Oduro were major attractions in the domestic league.
”There was a time when Charles Taylor was an attraction. Dong Bortey was an attraction. Ishmael Addo, Stephen Oduro. Supporters knew the characters of the league. They were heroes, the rivalries were deep and the personalities, as I have mentioned, could be identified.”
The minister said the situation was particularly concerning given the expansion of media platforms compared with previous years.
”Today, there is an increased media platforms than we had in the past, and there are many other platforms we could use to do this, but who are they and where are they? Why are we hiding them? Or have we not been able to produce them?”
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League has been scheduled to kick off on Saturday, 5 September.
