Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has hit back at GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over his description of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”.
Mr Ofosu Nkansah, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said Mr Gyamfi’s remarks were unwarranted, arguing that the Minority Leader and other opposition lawmakers have a constitutional responsibility to scrutinise government institutions.
His comments follow a press conference by Mr Afenyo-Markin on Tuesday, August 18, where he raised concerns about the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and alleged losses associated with its activities.
In response, Mr Gyamfi accused Mr Afenyo-Markin and his associates of mounting what he described as a “desperate smear campaign” against GoldBod.
He also described them as “devious extortionists and political mercenaries”, alleging that their criticism was aimed at tarnishing GoldBod’s reputation and putting pressure on its management.
Reacting in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 20, Mr Ofosu Nkansah questioned why former NPP Minority Leaders were not similarly labelled when the party supported their scrutiny of government.
“When NPP was supporting your then Minority leaders, no one called them extortionists. After they got the support, they still took on the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government,” he said.
Mr Ofosu Nkansah further criticised Mr Gyamfi for attacking the Minority Leader instead of responding to the issues raised about GoldBod.
“And you people think Sammy Gyamfi is beyond criticism, so you must call our leader names for taking his agency on? You people are not serious,” he added.
He concluded with a direct jab at the GoldBod CEO:
“If you are looking for extortionists, look within your party.”
