President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his adherence to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, stressing that he will not be on the ballot in 2028.
He said this position places him in a stronger position to enforce fiscal discipline and curb the recurring election-year overspending that has contributed to Ghana’s cyclical economic crises.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of his three-day state visit, Mahama decried the practice of incumbent governments circumventing fiscal safeguards to win electoral favour.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he assured.
The President highlighted economic gains recorded since his return to office in 2024, including rapid declines in inflation and interest rates, as well as a significant appreciation of the cedi.
Mahama’s remarks counter claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he intends to pursue a third term.
The Presidency and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have consistently dismissed such claims as misinformation aimed at distracting the public.
Mahama has repeatedly stressed that his current mandate is his final one under the Fourth Republic Constitution.
His latest comments in Singapore appeared to further dispel the rumours while underlining his commitment to safeguarding the economy in the run-up to the 2028 elections.
The bilateral talks in Singapore also focused on strengthening economic cooperation and boosting investment opportunities between Ghana and Singapore.
