An abandoned Agenda 111 health facility project in the Berekum West District of the Bono Region has been taken over by weeds and overgrown bushes, raising concerns among residents over the fate of the facility.
The project, initiated under the Akufo-Addo-led administration as part of the government’s Agenda 111 programme, was intended to improve access to healthcare by providing health facilities across districts in the country.
Construction of the facility in the Berekum West District commenced but was left incomplete before the previous administration left office. The project has since remained unattended, allowing weeds and bushes to take over the site and parts of the unfinished structure.
When completed, the facility is expected to serve residents in the entire Berekum West District, as well as parts of the Dormaa East, Jaman South and Berekum East districts, potentially making it an important healthcare facility for communities beyond Berekum West.
Residents are therefore expressing concern over the prolonged abandonment of the project, saying its current state could lead to the deterioration of the structures and undermine the public funds already invested in its construction.
They are appealing to the current government and relevant authorities to resume and complete the project to enable it to serve its intended purpose.
According to the residents, completing the facility would not only improve access to healthcare for thousands of people in the beneficiary districts but also prevent the waste of public resources on abandoned projects.
They are consequently urging the government to prioritise the completion of the facility and ensure that the investment made in the project translates into tangible healthcare benefits for residents in the area.
