Black Starlets head coach Kassim Ocansey says he expected more from his players despite Ghana’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Togo in their opening match at the 2026 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
David Kwarteng scored the decisive goal in the seventh minute to secure all three points for Ghana in their Group A encounter.
However, Ocansey believes his team should have won by a wider margin after creating several scoring opportunities during the match.
“We won, but I expected more from my boys,” Ocansey said after the game.
“We created good chances, but we couldn’t convert. I am happy we have the three points, but we could have done better with the chances we created,” he added.
The Ghana coach remains confident in his side’s attacking potential, insisting that improved finishing could help the team score more goals in their remaining matches.
“If we are able to convert the chances we create, we can get three or four goals in every game. We’ll work on that ahead of our next game,” Ocansey stated.
The victory gives the Black Starlets a positive start to their campaign as they seek to qualify for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations through the WAFU Zone B competition.
Ocansey will now focus on improving his players’ efficiency in front of goal as Ghana prepare for their next Group A fixture against Benin on Tuesday.
