The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates, with hundreds of candidates sanctioned over examination malpractice.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 29, WAEC said the results have been dispatched to schools through Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates may also access their results online through the Council’s official results portal.
A total of 620,243 candidates, made up of 304,415 males and 315,828 females, sat for this year’s examination. They were drawn from 20,789 schools and wrote the examination at 2,237 centres across the country.
According to WAEC, 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination.
The Council noted that special arrangements were made for candidates with special educational needs, including 136 visually impaired candidates, 282 hearing-impaired candidates and 510 others who required additional support.
As part of efforts to uphold the integrity of the examination, WAEC said its 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions against candidates found to have engaged in examination irregularities.
The subject results of 496 candidates have been cancelled, while the entire results of 105 candidates have also been cancelled for various offences.
Additionally, the subject results of 119 candidates have been withheld, while the complete results of 48 candidates remain withheld pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
WAEC further disclosed that the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny. The Council said investigations into these cases are expected to be completed by August 31, 2026, after which the affected results will either be released or cancelled depending on the findings.
Candidates whose results have been withheld or cancelled have been advised to visit WAEC’s irregularities portal or use the withheld/cancelled results link on the Council’s homepage to access details of the decisions and any required follow-up. School heads can also retrieve the information through their official login credentials.
The Council cautioned candidates and the general public against fraudsters who claim they can alter or upgrade examination results for a fee, stressing that its results are secure, tamper-proof and fully verifiable.
WAEC also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school heads, supervisors, invigilators, examiners and other stakeholders for their support in the successful conduct of the 2026 BECE and the timely release of the results.
