The Volta Regional Health Directorate has recorded 146 breast cancer cases and 10 deaths so far in 2026, prompting renewed calls for residents to prioritise screening and seek early treatment.

The Directorate is urging the public, particularly women, to overcome fear, stigma and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer and seek medical attention promptly.

The Acting Deputy Director of Public Health at the Directorate, Dr Hectoria Awekeya, made the call on behalf of the Volta Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Atsu Dodor.

This was in an interview with Adom News during the 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month national launch, sensitisation and screening programme in Ho.

The event, held at the GNAT Hall, was organised under the theme “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” with the sub-theme “United for a Breast Cancer-Free Ghana: Early Detection, Early Action, Better Outcomes.”

Dr Awekeya stressed the importance of addressing the fear, stigma and myths associated with breast cancer, noting that delayed presentation can affect treatment outcomes.

She encouraged the public to take advantage of free breast cancer screening services and seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes in their breasts.

According to her, early detection and timely intervention are critical to tackling the disease, while increased public awareness is needed to help reduce preventable deaths.

The Directorate is, therefore, calling on individuals, families and communities to support breast cancer awareness and screening initiatives to promote a culture of early detection.

The campaign forms part of broader efforts to increase awareness, encourage regular screening and reduce late presentation among people suspected of having breast cancer.
