Villarreal CF break silence on Thomas Partey’s rape charges

Villarreal CF have officially confirmed the signing of Ghana international Thomas Partey on a two-year deal but have also addressed the ongoing legal proceedings involving the midfielder in England.

Partey, 32, joined the Spanish La Liga side on a free transfer after his contract with Arsenal expired in June 2025.

In a statement released on Thursday, the club acknowledged that the player is facing serious legal charges in the United Kingdom, including five counts of rape involving two women and an additional sexual assault charge relating to a third woman. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022 during his time at Arsenal.

Partey has strongly denied all the allegations.

“The club is also aware that the player is currently involved in a legal proceeding in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case,” the statement said.

Villarreal further noted that UK legal restrictions prevent them from commenting further at this time.

The Spanish club also reiterated its broader commitment to ethical standards: “Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.”
